The Free Credit Checklist
so we are helping save each other 🤝🏾
Everything on this list is free. Not one thing on here costs you a dollar, and I checked every single one before I put it in front of you. ✅
A whole industry is built on charging you for stuff the law already gives you. Let me show you what you already have.
Before you spend a dime ⚡
If somebody is selling you a 609 letter that "erases any debt," they are selling you a fairy tale.
Section 609 of the law is a request to SEE your file. That is all it is. The law says right in it that a credit bureau is not required to remove accurate negative information. There is no secret letter, no magic word, and nobody has to produce your original signed contract. What actually works is Section 611, and that one is free.
Before you start 🤝🏾
If this gets to be a lot, you are not slow. It is built to be confusing.
Take it one step at a time. You do not have to do all of this in one night, and nothing on this list expires except the one deadline I flagged for you.
⏳ Start here
You cannot fix what you have not read.
Get your hands on it
Pull all three reports, and do it weekly
Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. The only official site is annualcreditreport.com. Free weekly access started during the pandemic and was made permanent in 2023. It is still the law right now.
Every other site asking for your card is selling you what the law already gave you.
Your report is not your score, and here is where to get the score free
This is the part that frustrates everybody. Annualcreditreport.com gives you the report, which is the actual data on you. It does not give you a score. That is not them being cheap, the score is a separate product.
Here is where to get the actual number, free, without a card:
Experian free account, gives you a FICO Score 8
Discover Credit Scorecard, FICO Score 8, and you do not have to be a Discover customer
Capital One CreditWise, switched to FICO 8 in 2025, open to anyone
Credit Karma, gives VantageScore 3.0, not FICO
Your own bank or card app, most already show it on the dashboard
Why your score is different everywhere you look
You do not have one credit score. You have dozens. Different bureaus hold different data, and different lenders use different models. Two scores pulled the same day being 20 to 50 points apart is normal. It is not an error and nobody is lying to you.
The one that matters most is FICO, because around 90% of top lenders use it. Credit Karma is not wrong, it is just showing VantageScore, which often runs 20 to 50 points higher than the FICO a lender is going to pull on you.
Do not panic when the number does not move right away
Bureau reporting runs on cycles. A new account, a big payment, or a dispute result usually takes 30 to 45 days to show up in your score.
You did nothing wrong. The system is just slow. Checking it every single day will only make you feel crazy.
Claim the extra Equifax reports before they expire
Because of settlements, Equifax is giving out at least six additional free reports a year on top of the weekly ones. That runs through December 31, 2026.
After that date it ends. If you have ever wanted to sit down and go through your file properly, this is the window.
Every time you get denied, that is another free report
Denied for credit, a job, insurance, or housing? They have to hand you an adverse action notice, and that notice entitles you to a free report from whichever company they pulled.
That is on top of your weekly ones. Most people throw that letter away. I did too, for years.
Pull the reports nobody talks about
The big three are not the only ones keeping a file on you. Each of these owes you a free copy every year:
ChexSystems and Early Warning, for banking
LexisNexis, which feeds insurance and background checks
NCTUE, for utility and cell phone accounts
The Work Number, for employment and income history
If you have been denied a bank account, an apartment, or a job and your credit looked fine, the answer is probably sitting in one of these.
Read it like a detective
Go line by line, not straight to the number
The score is the summary. The report is the evidence. Look for these:
An account you never opened
A balance or a date that is wrong
Something you paid that still says unpaid
The same debt listed twice under different names
An account listed as open that you closed
Anything older than 7 years still sitting there
Check all three, because they do not match
Each bureau gets fed by different companies. An error can sit on one report and not the others. If you only check one, you are looking at a third of the picture.
And when you find something wrong, you have to dispute it with each bureau that is reporting it. Fixing Experian does nothing to TransUnion.
Fix what is actually wrong
Dispute under Section 611, and go to the bureau first
Not 609. Section 611 is the one that forces an actual investigation. You file it free, directly with the bureau, and they have 30 days to verify it or take it off.
Be specific. Name the account, name exactly what is wrong about it, and send what you have to back it up.
If it is a collector, make them prove it first
This is different from disputing with the bureau. When a debt collector first contacts you, you have 30 days to send them a written request for validation under the debt collection law.
Once you send it, they have to stop collecting until they mail you verification of the debt. Not a printed screen with a balance on it. Actual proof it is yours.
When they write back "verified" and nothing changed
Happens all the time. Bureaus often just take the furnisher's word for it. Here is your next move, and the rules on this changed in 2026.
You can file a complaint with the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov, but as of 2026 they will shut your complaint down if you did not dispute with the company first. They also added identity verification and two factor login to cut down on junk complaints.
Ask them how they verified it
When a bureau says an item was verified, you can request a description of the procedure they used, including the name, address, and phone number of the company they contacted.
That one question separates a real investigation from a computer code getting passed back and forth. And it gives you the furnisher's actual contact info so you can go straight at the source.
The medical debt playbook
First, the truth, because people are lying about this
You are going to see all over the internet that medical debt got wiped off credit reports. That rule was written in January 2025, but a federal court threw it out in July 2025. It never took effect.
What IS still true, from the bureaus' own voluntary policy:
Paid medical collections should come off
Medical collections under $500 should come off
Nothing medical can hit your report until 365 days after it goes to collections
Ask the hospital for charity care, even if the bill is old
Here is what almost nobody tells you. Nonprofit hospitals are required by federal tax law to have a written financial assistance policy and to actually help patients who cannot pay. About 60% of hospitals in this country are nonprofit, so the odds are good yours is one.
Most policies cover people earning up to two to four times the federal poverty level. Some wipe the bill completely. And you are not the only one who did not know. Only about 29% of people who qualify ever get it, mostly because more than half were never told it existed.
How to actually run the charity care play
Search the hospital name plus "financial assistance policy" or "501r"
They have to post it free on their site with the application form
If you cannot find it, call and ask for it. They cannot charge you for it
Ask for an itemized bill too, and read every line
Apply even if you think you make too much. Ask about hardship exceptions
If you get denied, they have to tell you why and how they calculated your income
If it is approved after the bill already went to collections, the hospital should pull the debt back from the collector and fix your balance.
Check the bill against the estimate you were given
For scheduled care, if you are uninsured or paying cash, you are entitled to a good faith estimate up front. If the final bill comes back higher than that estimate by $400 or more, there is a federal dispute process you can use.
So keep every estimate they hand you. That paper is what gives the dispute teeth.
Build it back
Get credit for the rent you are already paying
For years paying rent on time did nothing for you while missing a mortgage payment wrecked you. That is changing. The newer scoring models count rent and utility history, and free tools like Experian Boost let you add those payments to your file.
If you have never had a credit card but you have paid rent on time for years, this is the door in.
Understand what changed in how you are scored
The new models, FICO 10T and VantageScore 4.0, look at 24 months of your behavior instead of one snapshot. So somebody paying a balance down every month now looks different from somebody whose balance is climbing, even if both owe the same today.
In 2026 mortgage lenders started being allowed to use these newer models. Steady progress finally counts for something.
Freeze your credit
A freeze is free at all three bureaus, it does not touch your score, and you can lift it any time you actually need somebody to pull your credit.
It stops anybody from opening an account in your name. There is no reason not to have it on.
The four laws you own
You do not need to be a lawyer. You just need to know these exist so nobody can tell you different.
The Fair Credit Reporting Act
FCRA
Your right to see your file, dispute what is wrong, get a free report when you are denied, and have most negative items fall off after 7 years. This is the big one.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
FDCPA
Governs collectors, not bureaus. Gives you the 30 day validation window, and it stops them from harassing you, calling at all hours, or lying to you about what they can do.
The Fair Credit Billing Act
FCBA
For credit card billing errors. You get 60 days from the statement to dispute a charge in writing, and they cannot report it as late while they are investigating.
The Equal Credit Opportunity Act
ECOA
Nobody can deny you credit because of your race, your sex, your marital status, your age, or because part of your income comes from public assistance. And if you are denied, they have to tell you why.
Every one of these is free to use. There is no version of these rights you have to buy.
Something I learned the hard way😭
I paid somebody to do things I could have done myself for free.
Nobody has a secret. There is no letter that erases a real debt. What there is, is a pile of rights the law already handed you that nobody bothered to explain.
Everything on this page is free. Every single thing. The only cost is a few hours and a stamp.
You are not behind because you did not try hard enough. You are behind because the information was kept from you. That is different, and now you have it.
One more thing 🤝🏾
There is more coming
This is one plug. I find them, I check them myself, and I write them out plain so you are not sitting up at midnight trying to figure out a government website by yourself.
A new one drops every week. Free beds for your kids. The school form that is worth over a thousand dollars. The federal law that stops them from taking your child's school seat. The free lawyer nobody tells you about.
Drop your email and you get the next one first.
Before it ever hits this page.
I am not a credit repair company and I do not fix anybody's credit for money. I am a woman who had to figure this out and I am telling you what I found.
